The two halves

Spark cards retrieve knowledge and Shift cards show you what stuck.

The two halves are different colours, so you can find the one you want without reading every card.

Spark · Retrieval

Get knowledge back out of heads.

Activities that make students pull information back out of memory. Recalling something strengthens it more than re-reading it or being told it again, which is one of the better-established findings in the research.

  • Recall, quizzing and team games
  • Movement, race and auction formats
  • Quiet sprints and word association
75 Spark cards · K-01 to K-75
Shift · Reflection

Find out what actually stuck.

Students look at their own understanding and decide what to do next: how sure they are, where the gaps sit, what to go back to.

  • Metacognition and self-audit
  • Calibration and confidence checks
  • Written reflection and precision
75 Shift cards · S-01 to S-75

Look closer

The front tells you what to do. The back tells you why it works.

On the front: three steps, a time, the materials, and a line on what to watch for. Turn it over for the study the card rests on and the command word it practises.

What we promise

What we promise on each card.

Low prep, high return

Most cards need nothing but pen, paper or the board, so you can pick one up and run it with the time you have left.

Names the research

Each card names the research it draws on and how it affects our students' thinking.

Look-fors built in

Every card describes what a good run looks like, so you know exactly what the activity should look like and how it is going.

What the pilot schools said.

Feedback from secondary teachers who ran the cards for us before launch.

I keep the deck on my desk and grab one when the energy drops. The Imposter card alone changed how my Year 11s listen.

The look-fors line is the bit I didn't know I needed. I can tell, mid-activity, whether a kid is thinking or going through the motions.

Even relievers can pick it up and run the activities. It will be the best PD spend of the year.

The New Zealand-based contexts make the deck feel so relatable; I love having a resource I don't have to adapt from overseas.

Context 01

The Dawn Raids & Civil Rights

Multiple retrieval and reflection cards use the Dawn Raids (1974–76) as a case study for civil resistance, constitutional rights, and community agency. History and Social Sciences.

Context 02

The Springbok Tour (1981)

A flashpoint in NZ's anti-apartheid movement. Cards use the Tour as a lens on protest, political identity, and how community action shapes policy. English, Social Sciences, Y11+.

Context 03

The NZ Wars & Whenua

Land, sovereignty, and tino rangatiratanga. Cards explore the NZ Wars (1845 to 1872) as context for understanding Māori self-determination and the politics of whenua. History, Social Sciences.

Every card was written by NZ secondary teachers and trialled in NZ classrooms. The contexts, vocabulary, and references are local so they land with your students. It was built for Aotearoa, not adapted from elsewhere.

One last thing

Give it one term on your desk.
